Cal Lutheran Starts Sports Management Major

California Lutheran University, which has provided a training facility for the Los Angeles Rams since 2016, will begin offering sports management as a major in the fall. The Thousand Oaks campus used the experts close at hand — representatives from the Rams — as well as officials from the Ladies Professional Golf Association and Western States Hockey League to develop the newly minted major. Classes will cover “ethical, legal and global perspectives” of sports management with such classes as Sports Media and Society, Broadcast Sports Production and Sport Facility Design and Management. California Lutheran has had sports management as a minor since 2013, the university said. It has become the fifth most popular choice among 42 other minors. “All of our sports-oriented classes are almost always full with a wait list,” Bruce Gillies, assistant professor of business administration, said in a statement. “Anyone who loves sports always wants to know more. More about the games. More about the marketing. More about the mental side of the game. More about the business of sports. It almost becomes more than a passion, an obsession.” It appears that jobs are growing in the field to meet its growing popularity, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a “faster-than-average job growth for coaches, scouts and sports marketing managers,” the college added. Gillies will serve as first program director. He has served as the university’s faculty athletic representative; chair of the Athletic Policy Committee; faculty advisor for the Cal Lutheran Knights ice hockey team, and faculty mentor for the football, soccer and baseball teams.
