Virus Nixes Sea Voyages

Santa Clarita-based Princess Cruises has canceled and modified voyages in China and Southeast Asia for this year following the coronavirus outbreak and the widely publicized quarantine on its Diamond Princess ship. Japanese officials confirmed the deaths of two people who were aboard the ship just days after Princess lifted its 14-day quarantine while at port in Yokohama, Japan. According to a report from USA Today, 634 Diamond Princess passengers have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Feb. 21. The earliest itinerary change was posted to the Princess website Feb. 10, with its Carribbean Princess cruise cut short and returned to the Port of Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Other voyages set to depart this spring from Singapore, Japan; Hong Kong and Taiwan were cancelled as well. Sapphire Princess cruises that were set to depart from Shanghai from July 10 through Oct. 22 were cancelled and are set to redeploy to Australia six months earlier than previously planned. “We are closely monitoring the developments, and our medical experts are coordinating closely with international health authorities,” Princess Cruises said in a statement. Reimbursement for customers varies based on which cruise was booked.
