Mechanics Class Full

By MARK R. MADLER Staff Reporter Jonathan Schaeffer of the Los Angeles Unified School District gave a presentation to the Valley Industry & Commerce Association Aviation Committee at the group’s meeting on March 4. The program in Mission Hills supports 150 students and has about a six-month waiting time to get in, Schaeffer said. “I wish I had more space; I wish I had more capacity; I wish I had more instructors,” Schaeffer told the committee. There are only five airframe and aircraft powerplant programs in all of Los Angeles. The North Valley’s aviation center, at 16550 Saticoy St. at Van Nuys Airport, is the only one serving the San Fernando Valley. The program has produced graduates who have gone to work for area aviation companies and 17 are currently working on the new Mars rover program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada-Flintridge. “I feel confident they can go out there and work on the plane that I’m going to fly on,” Schaeffer said. The aviation program is supported by such companies and their owners as Clay Lacy of Clay Lacy Aviation at Van Nuys Airport and Si Robin of Sensor Systems Inc. in Chatsworth.
