Prizes Offered for Chowing Down

Burbank Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the city of Burbank on a summerlong promotion offering monthly giveaways as incentives for diners of local restaurants, hoping to encourage increased business in a hard-hit sector.

The Chow Down Burbank contest launched June 28 and will run through September, allowing customers multiple daily opportunities to enter for a chance to win prizes ranging from sports tickets to hotel stays and vintage champagne. Customers must purchase meals or snacks from participating restaurant locations and, through the contest website, post photos of their food to social media with the tag #ChowDownBurbank.

Of the 400 restaurants in Burbank, more than 100 have signed up for inclusion in the promotion so far, with more being added. Independent locations such as Coral Cafe, Tallyrand and Antojitos are among the participating eateries, as well as local chains such as WingStop, Ameci’s Pizza and Islands. The goal of the contest is to encourage city residents to eat out five times each month while the contest runs — one breakfast, two lunches and two dinners are recommended — and patronize a variety of restaurants.

“Chown Down Burbank is a campaign that’s focused on our restaurant community. But the chamber and the city fully understand that this is going to be an ongoing recovery to support small businesses,” Jamie Keyser, chief executive at the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, said.

Burbank restaurants continue to suffer from the pandemic, reporting decreases in sales ranging from 20 to 60 percent since late 2020, according to a statement from the city. Employment in the sector remains down compared to pre-March 2020 levels and several restaurants in the area have permanently closed. The Chow Down campaign is the first of several planned campaigns by the Burbank Chamber to help restaurants and other small businesses recover.“We decided with our phase one approach, that we would focus on restaurants for a 90-day campaign,” Keyser Thomas said. “What we can do after that is pivot to figure out how we can also wrap our arms around the other small businesses … to make sure that they’re keeping their doors open.”The Chow Down campaign is free for restaurants to join and prizes have been both donated by business partners and sponsored by the city or the chamber. The growing prize list includes a private tour of Jay Leno’s garage, VIP studio tours from Warner Bros. and Universal Studios and tickets to Los Angeles Dodgers, Clippers, Lakers and Kings games.
