Capstone Widens Net Loss

Increased manufacturing costs for new lines of micro-turbines contributed to Capstone Turbine widening its net loss in the first quarter of its fiscal year. The Chatsworth-based company reported a loss of $15.3 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, on revenues of $13.7 million for the quarter ending June 30. In the same period a year ago, the company had a net loss of $9.8 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, on revenues of $7.5 million. Shipments for the first quarter were down when compared with the same period a year earlier. The average cost per micro-turbine unit increased, however, to $100,000 from $56,000 of the prior year. Research and development costs dropped in the first quarter as did general administrative costs due to a decrease in travel, labor expenses and marketing. Mark R. Madler
