Greuel Wants City Ethics Commission to Monitor Business Conflicts

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel introduced a motion that would give the City Ethics Commission jurisdiction over collecting Statements of City Business from City Commissioners. Since 1972, according to Greuel’s motion, Los Angeles has required all candidates for City office, elected City officials, City board and Commission members and general managers of city agencies to file a statement reporting any benefit a loan, grant, lease or contract received from the City of Los Angeles. Greuel said that it appears, however, that only candidates for elected office have filed the form with the City Clerk. Greuel said that it’s imperative for city commissioners to follow suit in order build trust in City government. “To ensure that decisions being made by commissioners are in the interest of the people, and not in the interest of political appointees, we need an open and transparent government where all city laws are enforced,” said Greuel. The City Council’s Rules and Elections Committee will review this proposal before it goes to the full City Council for consideration.
