With 99 percent of precincts reporting after last night’s mayoral election, Mayor James Hahn and City Councilman are headed for a May 17 runoff election in a repeat of the last election. Villaraigosa captured 33.07 percent of votes cast, followed by Hahn, with 23.68 percent. Former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg got 22.15 percent. There are more than 24,000 absentee ballots remaining to count, but Hertzberg conceded defeat after deciding the difference was too much to make up. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes in the primary, the two top finishers meet in a runoff election. In the Valley, Councilmembers Dennis Zine, Jack Weiss and Alex Padilla were reelected.
