LOS ANGELES , A dozen state legislators have challenged a proposal to drill for oil off the coast of Santa Barbara, saying it could set a precedent for more drilling along the 1,100 miles of California coastline. The members of the state’s Assembly Coastal Caucus, whose districts stretch from San Diego to Mendocino counties, voiced their criticism in a letter sent Jan. 12 to the State Lands Commission, which is expected to make a determination on the drilling project next week.
