LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Colleges Left Out It was good to read, in your June 8 edition, the informative cover story on sustainable construction, “Builders Taking the LEED,” and also to see the accompanying chart, “LEED Certified Buildings in the Greater San Fernando Valley Area.” But many of us associated with the Sustainable Building Program of the Los Angeles Community College District were disappointed that our projects were overlooked. At Los Angeles Valley College, we have a LEED Silver Maintenance & Operations building, as well as seven other projects under way that are expected to meet LEED standards. Likewise, at our two other San Fernando Valley colleges, Pierce College and Los Angeles Mission College, another nine construction projects in various stages of development or review are expected to achieve LEED status. In coming years, additional LEED buildings will go up on our campuses with the help of bond funds already approved by local voters. Our $6-billion Sustainable Building Program is one of the nation’s biggest green construction efforts. It is creating thousands of jobs locally while also bolstering the cause of environmentally responsible construction nationally by demonstrating new green techniques and inspiring the development of green construction materials. It deserves notice. Thank you. Larry Eisenberg Executive Director, Facilities Planning and Development Los Angeles Community College District
