Metro Approves Red Line Gates

Barrier gates will be installed at Metro Red Line stops in the San Fernando Valley in an effort to prevent fare skipping and improve safety. The Metro board approved Feb. 28 a $46 million lease contract with Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc. to install barrier gates on the Metro Red Line, Metro Purple Line and selected light rail stations in the next 18 months to two years. Red Line stops in the Valley are in North Hollywood and Universal City. Metro estimates it loses $5.5 million due to fare evasion. The new gating system could recover $3 million to $6 million annually to offset the losses as well as realize annual savings on fare inspector costs.
