THQ Restructures Wireless Division, Closes Three Offices

Video game publisher THQ Inc. laid off 100 employees in a restructuring of its wireless division to focus on high-end handheld devices. Agoura Hills-based THQ closed offices in San Diego, Great Britain and Germany. The San Diego closure eliminated 31 positions. Focusing on developing games for high-end handheld devices such as the Apple iPhone, Blackberry and Nokia N-Gage will help THQ strengthen its market share and achieve profitability, the company said. Universomo, with offices in Finland, remains the company’s studio for wireless games. THQ bought the studio in 2007. In November, THQ laid off 17 percent of its workforce and closed five studios as part of a restructuring that has the company putting its efforts on fewer, higher quality titles, making gains in the children and family markets, having a greater online presence, and dominating the fighting game category. Shares in THQ closed down at $4.24.
