Valley Leadership Institute Accepting Applications for 2008-2009 Class

The Valley Leadership Institute is accepting applications for its 2008-2009 Leadership Program through the end of September. It is open to all whether your interest is personal, civic, professional or charitable. VLI’s purpose, as stated in its brochure, is “to identify, recruit, select and train civic/community leaders dedicated to the betterment of the SFV and surrounding region.” “It really is good for ones’ personal and professional growth,” said Pam Campeau, “because I think there are components of the program that you can use within the work that you do.” She speaks from experience. Campeau, who handles community relations for Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, is a graduate of the 2002 program and has found the contacts she made invaluable in her career. She is also on the Board of VLI and is coordinating the upcoming session. The time commitment is one day a month and, Campeau hastens to add, there is no homework. Each day is dedicated to a specific topic such as transportation. On that day, “You are on a field trip,” she said, “and you hit every means of transportation right down to being on the boat down at the L.A. Harbor and understanding what goes on at the harbor, with imports and exports.” The $1,500 tuition is often paid by companies or nonprofit organizations that sponsor their staff, but for some without such generous patrons, scholarships are also available. More than 20 are expected to participate in the program. “We have (people from) corporations, nonprofits, chambers of commerce, electeds,” said Campeau, “so they’re coming from all walks of life into the program. The network that you come into is very valuable for future contacts.” Call (818) 586-4252 before Sept. 30 for an application and further information.
