Superior Improves Aluminum wheel manufacturer Superior Industries International, Inc. saw a jump in its net income for the first quarter, the company reported on May 10. The Van Nuys-based company had net income of $1.9 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, on revenues of $245 million for the period ending March 31. That is a 67 percent increase over the net income of $1.1 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, on revenues of $183.5 million for the same reporting period in 2006. For the quarter, unit wheel shipment increased 16.1 percent. “We are encouraged by this substantial rebound in shipments resulting from new program awards from our customers,” said Superior President and CEO Steven Borick. The increase in the company’s net revenue reflected a rise in volume, higher-pass through aluminum costs in selling prices and a shift toward larger wheel sizes. Start up costs at the company’s new plant in Chihuahua, Mexico, costs associated with the closure of a plant in Tennessee and production challenges at plants in the Midwest contributed to a decline in the gross margin. Chick to Audit Museum Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick announced May 10 her office will do a financial audit of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum. The audit was done at the behest of Councilman Richard Alarcon who was concerned about financial problems at the museum under construction at Hansen Dam. The city not having a children’s museum has left a void in the educational and cultural portfolio, Chick said. “Millions of precious public dollars have been poured into this project, and it is deeply disturbing that construction may be halted,” Chick said. The museum was founded 25 years ago and had been in the Civic Center building until 2000 when it was closed because of a lack of space for visitors. Dole Most Ethical The Dole Food Company was named one of the world’s most ethical companies by Ethisphere Magazine. The companies that made the list were recognized for their strong leadership in ethics and compliance, advancement of industry discourse on social and ethical issues and positive engagement in the communities in which they operate.
