40 Under 40, Peterson

Tage Peterson, 37 Sales executive, Momentous Insurance Brokerage Wherever Tage Peterson goes, his clients follow. The 37-year-old insurance broker left a south Pasadena agency, where he worked for seven years, more than a year ago. He wasn’t sure whether his clients would follow him to the greener pastures of Van Nuys. “Anytime you make a change of this type, you worry about how your clients will handle such a move,” he said. “It was overwhelming to see the extreme loyalty and kind words given to me by my clients that, wherever I went, they would follow.” Now at Momentous Insurance Brokerage, Peterson says he’s built his strong customer following and loyal base by looking out for his clients, even if the best deal wasn’t always the most lucrative. “One thing I have learned in dealing with people is being able to put myself in their shoes and see what is important through their eyes,” he said. “In doing that, I have become much more successful in matching up products and finding solutions that meet their unique needs instead of simply pushing the product of the day.” The Azusa Pacific University graduate and 2009 school Hall of Fame inductee says making the best decision for clients, and not worrying about short-term advancement, is the best way to build a long and successful career. “Determine how you can differentiate yourself by doing something that is over and above. Never trade out the honest deal for the quick buck,” Peterson said. “It is much better to have loyal clients who will stay with you for 30 years than to have one who does not respect your work and will leave you in a year.”
