Software for Nurses’ Case Management

Coming fresh out of a rebranding initiative, case management software company Olive aims to have its platform used by social workers and public health nurses worldwide. The Thousand Oaks company, formerly known as Nurse Referral Pro, was formed more than a year ago by software developer Todd Mueller and case management expert Nancy Leidelmeijer. Olive currently has three employees, including the founders.Despite its small size and startup status, the Olive software platform, which helps social workers and public health nurses monitor patient wellbeing, is used by counties and nonprofit organizations across the country.“At first it was geared toward public health nurses,” said Mueller. “We’ve heard from social workers that they really like it too, so based on that, we said it’s kind of hard to sell Nurse Referral Pro to a social worker — it just didn’t fit well. That’s when we did the rebrand to Olive.”The platform scales in such a way that an independently owned nonprofit organization can have its social workers use the system and pay a monthly fee, while a county medical system can have its 500 Medicare workers submit documentation on clients and get reimbursed with the app.“It allows them to document and manage their clients — it’s mobile friendly so they can actually go out into the field and document while they’re out in the field,” said Mueller. “Case management does track various bits of information, but it relates to a care plan. It’s similar to but not as in-depth as an electronic medical record system that a provider would use.”Mueller, with more than 20 years of expertise in software development and past partnerships with government entities such as Ventura County, told the Business Journal that unlike other software platforms that cater to social media or other industries, those in the health care realm tend to have longer development time frames. The company’s plan to take its platform global, for instance, is estimated to take between three to five years, Mueller said.“It’s very slow moving because of public health and government agencies. We know our outlook is quite a bit different than a social medical platform, where you know pretty quickly if your platform is going to work,” explained Mueller. “Our long-term goals are 10-plus years. We just want to keep delivering the best product we can.”
