Commons to Be Remade?

Caruso Affiliated has submitted plans to the city of Calabasas to make changes to The Commons shopping and dining center.

Called The Commons Lane, the reimagining of The Commons would include apartment homes, shopping, outdoor dining and a meandering paseo with wide sidewalks.

“While most of The Commons will remain the same, the plan introduces a beautiful and charming new gathering place to the west of Commons Way that preserves the best of The Commons today while making it even better for the future,” says the project’s website.

The apartments would be built on what is now the Regency Theatres and would cater to recent college graduates, young families and seniors looking to downsize. The apartments will be set back from shops and the street.

Over the past year and a half, Caruso has talked with various stakeholders in the city – residents, public officials, business owners – about the future of the Commons, which opened in 1998.

“Residents agreed that the world has changed over the past 25 years, and The Commons must evolve to ensure it stays vibrant,” the project’s website said. “Ideas included more restaurants with a wider variety of cuisines, stores and more activities for people of all ages.”

The anticipated completion date of the project has not been announced.
