Princess Commissions Construction of Two Next-Generation Cruise Ships

Princess Cruises has signed contracts with Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri for the construction of two next-generation cruise ships. The ships will weigh in at 175,000 tons each and will boast guest capacity of roughly 4,300. They will be the largest ships ever built in Italy. Additionally, the vessels will be the first Princess cruise ships powered by liquefied natural gas, the world’s cleanest fossil fuel and the greenest fuel option for marine use. They will also be outfitted with Princess’ Ocean Medallion platform, which lets guests access food, entertainment, gaming and other functions with a wearable disc-shaped device. Delivery of the first ship is scheduled for late 2023, and spring 2025 for the second. “Princess Cruises continues to grow globally — adding new ships to our fleet built by our long-time trusted ship building partner, Fincantieri, who brings decades of expertise to these next-generation cruise ships,” said Princess Cruises President Jan Swartz in a statement. Princess Cruises, based in Santa Clarita, now has five ships being constructed over the next six years.
