Adult Moratorium in Effect

A moratorium on adult film production remained in effect on Friday after a testing center reported a possible positive HIV test for an adult performer. The Free Speech Coalition, the Canoga Park trade group for the adult industry, called for the moratorium on Thursday after an initial report of the test, which still needed to be verified. Coalition Chief Executive Diane Duke said the next steps will be identifying partners of the possibly infected performer. “We take the health of our performers very seriously and felt that it was better to err on the side of caution while we determine whether anyone else may have been exposed,” Duke said in a prepared statement. The testing center reported the possibly positive HIV test as part of the coalition’s testing regimen, which requires performers test for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases every 14 days. Last year, the industry increased the testing frequency from a month amid an ongoing fight led by industry critics to require adult performers to wear condoms. That requirement is now in place in Los Angeles, sharply slowing local filming, but an effort to make it statewide was shelved this month in the Legislature. In December, an eight-day moratorium was called on adult filming after a performer tested positive for HIV. There were also moratoriums in August 2012 after a performer tested positive for syphilis and again in August 2013.
