Amgen Tour to Spin on Area Roads

The Amgen Tour of California will take a twisting route through several Valley-area communities when the ninth edition of the weeklong bicycle race is held this May, according to route details released on Thursday. The race will begin May 11 in Sacramento and make its way through the Central Coast before arriving in Santa Clarita. Newhall will host the start of Stage 6 on May 16 with cyclists following a 97-mile uphill route that will take them through Palmdale with a finish at Mountain High Ski Resort in the San Gabriel Mountains. Santa Clarita also will play host to Stage 7 of the race with start at the Valencia Town Center Mall. The 91-mile course will send the cyclist to Acton where they will head into the Angeles National Forest, pass Mt. Wilson and finish in Pasadena. The final and eighth leg of the race on May 18 will begin and end in sponsor Amgen’s base of Thousand Oaks. The course of four 20-mile circuits will take the field up to Mulholland Drive and through Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. The tour features top international teams competing against lower level domestic competition. Organizers released the names of additional teams competing: UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, Team Novo Nordisk, Team NetApp-Endura, Optum Pro Cycling, Team Jamis-Hagens Berman, Jelly Belly Cycling Team and Bissell Development Team. The Tour of California is owned by AEG, the Los Angeles sports and entertainment company of Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz. It has been sponsored by Amgen since its inception in 2006.
