Briefs: Salem, Valley Presbyterian, Sport Chalet

Shares of Salem Communications Corp. rose slightly on Friday after the company announced fourth quarter results. The Camarillo broadcaster and publisher for the conservative Christian market reported net income of $5.3 million (21 cents a share) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared to $2 million (8 cents) for the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue increased 3.5 percent to $62.3 million. For the full year, the company reported a net loss of $2.7 million (-11 cents) compared to net income of $4.5 million (18 cents) for the previous year. Shares closed up 16 cents, or 1.8 percent to $9.09 on the Nasdaq. Valley Presbyterian Hospital has received a grant from the Ahmanson Foundation to fund the purchase of 21 cardiac monitors for its intensive care unit. The non-profit Van Nuys hospital said the monitors are an upgrade to the technology currently installed and will improve patient outcomes. The new monitors can interact wirelessly with other medical devices, and nurses and doctors can receive data on the patient remotely. Also, the monitors automatically record patient data, eliminating the need for nurses to record data manually. Valley Presbyterian has 350 beds, including 20 in its intensive care unit, which treats about 900 critically ill or injured patients annually. The hospital did not specify the monetary value of the grant from the Beverly Hills foundation. Sport Chalet Inc. will be the official apparel and equipment provider for Cal State University Northridge’s Matador athletic teams. The La Canada Flintridge retailer entered into a multi-year agreement with the athletic department this week. Under the agreement, Sport Chalet said it will provide the gear for 19 men’s and women’s NCAA Division 1 sports for “the best collegiate pricing in the market.” Earlier this month, Sport Chalet entered into a three-year agreement with Pepperdine University to be the exclusive apparel and equipment provider for the Waves’ athletic teams.
