Briefs: Teledyne, Seven Lakes

A former president of BP America Inc. has joined the board of directors of Teledyne Technologies Inc., the company announced Thursday. Robert A. Malone joins the board of the Thousand Oaks aviation, marine and energy products manufacturer effective July 1. The addition of Malone raises the number of board members to 11. Malone is chief executive of First Sonora Bancshares Inc., in Sonora, Texas. He served as chairman and president of BP America Inc. for three years until retiring in 2009. In that role, Malone was the chief representative for the energy company in the U.S. “Bob’s extensive experience in the energy and natural resources industries will deepen our insight into these complex global markets,” Teledyne Chief Executive Robert Mehrabian said in a prepared statement. Malone also serves on the board of First Sonora, Halliburton Co. and Peabody Energy Corp. Shares closed up $1.55, or about 1.5 percent, to $107.77 on the New York Stock Exchange. Seven Lakes Technologies Chief Executive Shiva Rajagopalan was among the winners receiving an Entrepreneur of the Year award from tax and advisory firm Ernst & Young Global Ltd. Rajagopalan received the award in the Business Services category. A total of eight awards were presented to business entrepreneurs in a program at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Tuesday night. Seven Lakes, in Westlake Village, develops software for the oil industry. Its programs monitor and analyze well production, manage well-related accounting and schedule drilling operations. Rajagopalan came to the United States after graduating from college in India. He started working in ecommerce, then worked in real estate until he got a green card and then landed a job at Chevron Corp. in 2007. He ended up living in a trailer outside Bakersfield, surrounded by 10,000 active oil wells. An IT guy, Rajagopalan spent time at the wells trying to improve data collection and processing. In 2009 he founded Seven Lakes to develop software based on his experience. The Entrepreneur of the Year program is in its 29th year and recognizes business leaders in over 145 cities in 60 countries throughout the world. Regional award recipients are eligible for consideration in for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards national program scheduled for November in Palm Springs.
