The Disney Channel will be available in Russia starting next year following The Walt Disney Co.’s acquisition of a Russian television network. The Burbank-based media and entertainment conglomerate will own 49 percent of the Seven TV Network and operate it along with the majority owner, UTH Russia. The ad-supported Disney Channel will reach about 40 million households. “International expansion is a key strategic priority for our company and Disney Channel has proven to be invaluable in building the Disney brand around the world,” said Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger, in a prepared statement. Seven TV switched its programming from sports to general entertainment in 2010 to improved ratings and financial results, said UTH Russia CEO Ivan Tavrin. “Now it’s time for a new page in the network’s history,” Tavrin said, in a prepared statement. “I am confident about the success of the Disney Channel and our long term partnership with The Walt Disney Company.”
