Dodgers, Businesses Help Valley Rescue Mission

The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation is holding a donation drive to help support the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, which experienced a severe fire this month. The Dodgers announced they will hold a collection at the May 15 game, and will accept online donations on their website through May 19. “The Dodger community spans far and wide and we feel strongly about the unfortunate circumstances affecting our neighbors at the San Fernando Valley Mission,” Dodger Senior Vice President External Affairs Renata Simril said in a statement. Other business community leaders have shown their support for the local rescue mission in recent weeks as well. NBC Universal Inc., Disney/ABC Television Group, the Westfield Group, LA Outdoor Advertising Coalition, Southern California Gas Co., Vons and WalMart Stores Inc. donated a total of $75,000 to the Rescue the Mission fund. Seven San Fernando Valley councilmembers also donated a collective $17,500 to the campaign, and all fire stations in the Valley are accepting in kind donations such as clothing, bedding and food. The fire on May 3 caused destruction to several structures including the rescue mission’s emergency shelter, vehicle fleet, clothing warehouse and food pantry. “We’ve got a long way to go before the Rescue Mission gets back on its feet, but this is a start,” said Councilman Paul Krekorian in a statement. “The next step is getting everyone who can to donate.”
