EA to Produce Disney ‘Star Wars’ Videogames

Walt Disney Co. has signed a deal with Electronic Arts Inc. to develop and publish video games based on “Star Wars” characters and storylines. The move by the Burbank media and entertainment conglomerate comes a month after it closed down San Francisco-based LucasArts, the long-time developer of “Star Wars”-related video games. Financial terms of the deal between Disney and Electronic Arts, based in the Redwood City in northern California, were not disclosed. Electronic Arts will develop “Star Wars” game titles for a core gaming audience on consoles, while Disney has rights to make new titles for mobile, tablet, online and social media distribution. “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the “Star Wars” franchise for years to come,” said John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive, in a prepared statement. In midday trading, shares of Disney were up 25 cents or less than 1 percent to $65.33 on the New York Stock Exchange.
