Glendale Hospital Workers Join Union

Nurses, technicians and other workers at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital have voted to join the SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, the union announced on Monday. The 200 workers at the Glendale hospital that will join the union include certified nursing assistants, licensed vocational nurses, patient services representatives, secretaries, obstetric technicians and phlebotomists. The announcement follows a vote in March by registered nurses at the hospital to join the California Nurses Association, an independent union that has at times battled against the SEIU on a variety of issues. The non-profit USC Verdugo Hills Hospital was purchased by Keck Medicine of USC last year, with the promise to invest $30 million and improve the facility and operations. The hospital has 158 beds. USC owns two other hospitals, which also have agreements with the SEIU and the California Nurses Association. SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West represents 150,000 health care professionals in California.
