Hulu Signs BBC Content Deal

Video streaming service Hulu announced Wednesday it will offer programming from BBC Worldwide North America after signing a multi-year agreement with the British broadcaster. Programs to be available on the subscription Hulu Plus service include sci-fi series “Dr. Who,” dramas “Sherlock” and “MI-5,” and comedies “Fawlty Towers” and “Blackadder.” The Santa Monica-based service, founded in 2008, is jointly owned by Walt Disney Co., NBCUniversal and 21st Century Fox. BBC Worldwide North America is a commercial arm of the British Broadcasting Corp. Hulu and BBC Worldwide North America have previously collaborated on international co-productions and exclusive shows for the America market, said Andy Forssell, acting chief executive of Hulu. “By adding this expansive collection of premium BBC Worldwide programming, Hulu Plus solidifies its role as a top streaming platform for the best British programming available in the U.S,” Forssell said in a prepared statement. Additional series will roll out throughout the year, giving Hulu Plus subscribers access to more than 2,000 episodes of new and landmark BBC Worldwide titles. A selection of BBC Worldwide library programs will rotate through the free Hulu.com service.
