Ikea to Begin Demolition for New Burbank Store

Home furnishing retailer Ikea will begin demolition Thursday at the 22-acre Burbank site where the chain will construct its largest U.S. store. The Netherlands-based chain will raze 19 buildings at 805 S. San Fernando Road to build a 470,000-square-foot store. It will replace a 242,000-square-foot outlet less than a mile away near Burbank Town Center mall. The 19 buildings comprise 455,000 square feet and demolition is expected to last four to six weeks. Ikea plans to salvage and recycle much of the materials, with some used for the construction on site. The company, which has all its permits, plans to begin building the new store in the fall. Shopping will continue at the existing Ikea until the new store opens in spring 2017, when the old store will be closed. “At the existing Ikea store parking access can be a bit challenging on busy days so this will be completely improved with the new store, in addition to being almost twice the size,” said Joseph Roth, Ikea’s local public affairs manager. Crown Realty and Development Inc., the Irvine owner of the Burbank Town Center, has expressed interest in expanding the mall onto the existing Ikea property.
