A new Lancaster company providing aerial surveillance services will receive its first contract from the City of Lancaster. Aero View LLC will outfit a Cessna 172 with cameras from a third-party vendor and install a communication link between the aircraft and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s station in Lancaster. The link was developed by Spiral Technology, which is headed up by Aero View President Steve McCarter. This is the third time the city has sought an aerial surveillance system as a way to combat crime. The City Council will vote Nov. 8 on an agreement with Aero View to acquire the plane, cameras and other equipment valued at $1.3 million. The difference with the Aero View system is that the Cessna can fly at between 1,000 feet and 3,000 feet and the sheriff’s police can control the direction of the cameras from their station, McCarter, said. “We picked an aircraft with light fuel consumption so it ends up operating at less expense,” McCarter said. The Cessna will be stored and maintained at Fox Field. Public safety is a high priority for the council and the addition of the Cessna with cameras gives an aerial advantage, said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris in a prepared statement. “With Aero View and Spiral Technology being headquartered here in Lancaster, the Antelope Valley will reap the benefits of both significant economic activity and jobs,” Parris said. “This is exactly the type of boost we need to our local economy.”
