Layoffs at St. Jude Medical

St. Jude Medical Inc. will lay off up to 270 employees at its Sylmar heart-device manufacturing facility following a corporate restructuring. The St. Paul, Minn. medical device company said it is eliminating the second shift at the Sylmar plant to optimize operations. That facility produces implantable defibrillators and pacemaker products. The layoffs are scheduled to go into effect as of July 28, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the state Employment Development Department. Second shift employees will be able to apply for open position in the first shift, offsetting some of the job losses, said Micki Sievwright, a company spokesperson. “We are working to ensure a smooth and respectful process for all employees and to support them during their employment transition,” Sievwright said. In January, St. Jude announced it was integrating its two operating divisions: implantable electronic systems, which includes the Sylmar location, and cardiovascular and ablation technologies. The units will become a single research and development organization, combining manufacturing and supply-chain operations worldwide. The company previously laid off Sylmar workers in 2012 when more than 200 employees were let go following another corporate restructuring.
