More Valley Haggen Stores To Sell

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the sale of 47 additional Haggen Food & Pharmacy stores, the failed grocery chain announced Wednesday, including seven located in the greater Valley area. The purchase agreements amounted to $47 million in assets. In its first foray into Ventura County, Stater Bros. Markets is purchasing a Haggen store in Simi Valley. The San Bernardino-based grocer has 168 locations statewide. Florida grocery store developer Regency Centers LP is purchasing a Haggen outlet in Woodland Hills, while Donahue Schriber Realty of Costa Mesa will buy a Camarillo Haggen store. Albertson’s LLC of Boise was approved to purchase a Haggen store in Tujunga. The chain had sold dozens of its former locations to Haggen under a government order to divest some stores amidst Albertson’s merger with Safeway Inc. earlier this year. Haggen opted to purchase and convert 83 Albertsons, Vons and Pavilion stores, but the Washington state grocery chain struggled and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in September. Wednesday’s action follows the Delaware bankruptcy court’s earlier approval of Haggen purchase agreements by Gelson’s Markets of Encino and Smart & Final LLC of Commerce. Gelson’s purchased eight stores in California – one of which is in Thousand Oaks – for $36 million. Of the 28 stores Smart & Final purchased for $56 million, four are in greater Valley areas in Newbury Park, Palmdale, Simi Valley and Westlake Village.
