New Majority Leader Would Benefit A.V. Business

With Rep. Kevin McCarthy all but assured to become Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Antelope Valley will have a strong supporter for its business interests in the body’s No. 2 position. McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, is considered to be the front runner to replace Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor who was defeated for re-election to the House in the June 10 primary. An election to choose the next majority leader is scheduled for June 19. Norm Hickling, the senior deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich in the Antelope Valley, described as “positive and fortuitous” the circumstances bringing McCarthy, 49, to majority leader position. “He has been a strong advocate for veterans, a strong advocate for the aerospace and space industry in the Antelope Valley,” Hickling said. “I am sure he will continue with those focuses and be a strong advocate for economic development.” McCarthy was first elected to the House in 2006, and became majority whip in 2011. His district includes parts of Lancaster, the communities of Rosamond, Mojave and Tehachapi, and Edwards Air Force Base. Hickling said McCarthy maintains strong ties to north Los Angeles County, with his staffers attending a monthly meeting of elected officials from the area. “Supervisor Antonovich looks forward to working with him on issues pertinent to the Antelope Valley,” Hickling added.
