Pierce College President Staying Put

Pierce College President Kathleen Burke will not be leaving the college to take an executive position with the Los Angeles Community College District. There had been speculation that Burke would leave the Woodland Hills community college for the district’s Los Angeles administrative offices since news leaked last week that Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez had asked her to join his executive cabinet. However, in a letter that was sent to Pierce faculty and staff on Tuesday, Rodriguez wrote that he had rescinded his request that Burke assume the position of vice chancellor of institutional effectiveness. “I was consulting with Dr. Burke, given her skills with and knowledge of accreditation, and exploring a potential transfer to a district-wide coordination role,” he wrote. “However, after careful consideration and in the interest of maintaining stable leadership at Pierce College, I have withdrawn my request for Dr. Burke’s transfer to the Vice Chancellor post.” Burke, who has led the community college since 2010, was not made available for comment. But a Pierce spokeswoman said Burke would let the letter “speak for itself.” In it, Rodriguez decried that news of the move had been made public prior to a final decision. “It is unfortunate that a confidential, personnel matter that had yet to be finalized has received such public attention and speculation,” the chancellor wrote. “Dr. Burke will continue to serve the District as President at Los Angeles Pierce College with my full confidence and support.”
