Real Estate Investor Guy Weddington McCreary Dies at 77

Guy Weddington McCreary, a member of the founding family of North Hollywood, died last weekend. He was 77. The Weddington family came out to the Valley in 1891, dragging a farm house from Iowa. The house, which became a city historic monument, ended up in what is now North Hollywood, where the family has a street named in its honor. It also donated land for North Hollywood Park. McCreary spent his whole life in the Valley, attending North Hollywood High School and Whittier College. Through the decades, he helped run the family business and was a real estate investor and preservationist. He also was a member of various organizations, including the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of North Hollywood. His death comes as the family is in the midst of proposing a controversial development plan for its Weddington Golf and Tennis Complex at 4141 Whitsett Ave. in Studio City. The family is seeking to build 200 senior condos on a portion of the 16 acre property, which it has owned for more than a century. The project, dubbed the Studio City Senior Living Center, would redevelop only about a fourth of the land but has been opposed by some residents, who don’t want significant development along the river. McCreary is survived by his wife and son. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church of North Hollywood, 4390 Colfax Ave. in Studio City. The family has requested any donations be made to Campo de Cahuenga Historical Memorial Association at P.O. Box 956 in North Hollywood.
