‘Thor’ Scores $86 Million

Marvel Entertainment’s “Thor: The Dark World” brought in $86 million in domestic box office in its opening weekend, the fourth highest for the year. In addition, the second “Thor” movie brought in about $100 million overseas, making it likely the film will earn back its estimated $170 million budget. “Thor: The Dark World” is distributed by Walt Disney Co., the Burbank entertainment and media conglomerate that owns Marvel Entertainment and its stable of superhero characters. The first “Thor” movie was released in 2011 and brought in $65.7 million on its opening weekend. The film brought in a total box office gross of $181 million. “The Dark World’s” opening was the fourth best of the year behind “Iron Man 3,” also from Marvel and Disney, at $174 million; “Man of Steel” from Warner Bros. at $117 million; and Universal Picture’s “Fast & Furious 6” with $97 million. Shares of Disney on Monday closed down 24 cents or less than 1 percent to $68.34 on the New York Stock Exchange.
