Thousands of Buildings Threatened as Lake Fire Rages Uncontained

Three structures in the Antelope Valley have been destroyed and more than 5,000 more are threatened by a fire that broke out near Lake Hughes on Wednesday afternoon. Officials with the Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Department said the Lake Fire covered at least 10,500 acres, starting near the 5 Freeway and moving toward bedroom communities west of Lancaster. “Overnight firefighters continued to provide structure defense with ground crews as well as provide aerial fire suppression,” LAFD said in an incident report Thursday morning. “Today, hot air temperatures in the 90s and 100s, lower relative humidities, and drying fuels will bring elevated fire weather conditions to the Lake Fire. Extreme and aggressive fire behavior influenced by steep topography, with spotting and rapid fire growth are expected.” Homes have been evacuated on Lake Hughes Road west of Pine Canyon, north of Dry Gulch Road; east of Ridge Route Road; west of Lake Hughes Road and Fire Station 78; north of Pine Canyon and Lake Hughes Road, and south of SR-138. Those asked to evacuate were sent to Highland High School in Palmdale and Castaic Sports Complex in Castaic. The fire is zero percent contained as of Thursday afternoon, according to the LAFD.
