Valley Voters Head to the Polls

San Fernando Valley voters headed to the polls today to choose a new mayor – both with strong ties to the area. No clear frontrunner has emerged in the mayor’s race between Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel. Voter turnout is expected to be low, around 20 percent of registered voters, despite a record 167,657 vote-by-mail ballots. Also on the ballot are three initiatives calling for the regulation of medical marijuana in the city. Proposition D, placed on the ballot by the City Council, calls for an increased tax on marijuana dispensaries and caps the number of permitted shops at 135. Ordinance F, backed by dispensaries, would allow an unlimited number of pot shops in the city, as long as those shops follow tightened regulations, including background checks. Voters also are deciding between incumbent City Attorney Carmen Trutanich and his opponent, former Assemblyman Mike Feuer. City Councilman Dennis Zine and businessman Ron Galperin are competing for Greuel’s controller position. Council District 6, which covers much of the Valley, is also up for grabs. Three other council seats, a Los Angeles Unified School District board seat and a Los Angeles Community College trustee position will also be decided today. The polls close at 8 p.m.
