Viking Takes Delivery of Ocean Vessel

Viking Cruises, best known for its river cruises, has taken delivery of its first ocean cruise ship, the Viking Star. The ship was built for the Woodland Hills company by Fincantieri, a leading cruise ship builder based in Trieste, Italy. It is the first of three luxury ocean ships Viking is having built for it at a cost that experts peg at roughly $350 to $400 million each. Viking will christen the Viking Star in Bergen, Norway on May 17. It took delivery on March 28 at a Venice ceremony. The Viking Star weighs 47,800 tons, has 465 cabins and can accommodate 930 guest passengers – considerably smaller than typical mass market ocean cruise ships that can hold 3,000 thousand passengers or more. The ship will set sail on its first voyage this year. Its itineraries will include Scandinavia and the Baltic, the Mediterranean and the British Isles. “WithViking Star’s maiden voyage and christening now within sight, we are ready to bring our destination-focused experiences to ocean cruising,” said Viking Cruises Chairman Torstein Hagen, in a statement. The company has a fleet of 60 river cruise vessels and is known for offering culturally-enriched cruises along the rivers of Europe, Russia, Egypt and China.
